To this end, Frontiers in Communication is organizing a series of Research Topics to highlight the latest advancements in the field. This editorial initiative, led by Prof. Matthias Karmasin and Dr. Tobias Eberwein, Specialty Chief Editors of the Media Governance and the Public Sphere section, is focused on new insights, novel developments, current challenges, recent advances, and future perspectives in the field of media governance and the public sphere field.

The Research Topic solicits brief, forward-looking contributions from editorial board members that either describe the state of the art or highlight the changes needed to move the field forward. The goal of this special edition Research Topic is to shed light on the progress made in the past decade in the media governance and the public sphere field and on its future challenges to provide a thorough overview of the state of the art of the media governance and the public sphere field.
